20/24 Mai we had the pleasure of teaching 5 eager kitesurfers how to be an IKO assistant. Our group was a mix of Italians and a German candidate so we run the course in English.

The first day we had rain so we met inside and did theory and kite repair.

Every student got the IKO assistant Manual (a 160 page book). This manual is the guideline for the course. It covers in depth the kite equipment, the weather, lesson plan and lot’s more. Besides that every candidate received a laminated the IKO visual lesson plan, the Right of Way Rules, international signals, the certification standars and the Wind Window.

From day 2 we had perfect weather and met everyday at the beach of the Wind Riders school. Robbie the owner of the school put up the tent so that we had a big place of shadow to cover theory.

On the beach we did a lot of simulation, a demonstration of a beginner lesson. Practicing with the trainer kites and teaching each other the visual lesson plan of a beginner lesson.

On the water we did 2 riding tests. One with light wind, one with strong wind. The candidates demonstrated: upwind bodydrag to the board, with the board, riding tooside, jumping in both directions, gybing, recovering a person in the water, selfrescue, safely taking and passing a kite from the student. Then we had 2 teaching session with real students. The went through the lesson plan with eas. And both test students fell in love with our sport and are coming back for more kitesurf lessons! Because we are teaching on Lake Garda the candidates also had the chance to launch and recover a kite by using a boat.

After 5 very intensive days we finished with a theory test. All candidates pasted and left with their IKO Assistant diploma! For me it was an extra special course. It was the first one after haven taken a 3 year break to take care of my suns (now 2,5 year and 10 months). Teaching this course reminded me that I loved running assistant courses, teaching medic first aid and RYA powerboat courses. So there will be more courses scheduled soon 🙂 Are you interested?
