How to: relaunch your kite & make an upwind bodydrag

– HOW TO RELAUNCH A KITE IN LIGHT WIND.

When relaunching a kite in light wind it can often be difficult and very, very frustrating. So we have a few key points for you to do which will make it a lot easier and quicker for you.

 

Kite lying on LE in Water:

Firstly always look around to make sure your wind-window is clear, then sit in the water with your board still on your feet and legs in front of you and open up your body wide to create as much resistance as possible (Very important for success).

Push the bar out as far as it will go, and hold it in place with your hand so it can’t slide back towards you. If it is not all the way out 99% of the time your kite will fall on its back. Then take your free hand and very gently pull on the top steering line, but be careful not to pull to hard straight away as the kite will fall backwards. Increase your pull according to how the kite sits on the water, you want to keep the top wingtip above the bottom one. Keep constant tension on the top line and the kite will slowly come up and out of the water, Follow these steps and you’ll have your kite in the air in no time!

Okay now the kite is in the most frustrating position for relaunching.

Most important thing is to line yourself up with the wind so the kite is DIRECTLY downwind of you, if you don’t do this the bridle will get stuck under the wingtip and you will be back at the beginning of this relaunch before you know what happened.

Then when you are lined up with the wind and kite, swim backwards to make sure the lines are under tension. When the lines are under tension, grab the power lines above the bar(where most trim straps are) and give them big shocks, pull hard and fast on the power lines in a motion up and over your head.

The kite will flip over onto its LE and then it’s onto the normal relaunching steps

– HOW TO TRIM A KITE CORRECTLY (depower cord but also knots on the kite)

When you go in the water with your kite it is important you are able to trim your kite according to the conditions so that you get the best steering and depower possible.

Firstly we have the depower strap: this strap when used either pulls the LE of the kite in( decreasing the kites angle of attack, Depowering the kite) or lengthens the front lines letting the kite catch more air (increasing the angle of attack, powering up the kite) this is the most basic way to correctly trim your kite. You want it so that when you push the bar all the way out you still have good depower but not so much that you can no longer steer the kite but also that when you pull the bar in you don’t back stall the kite all the time (important in light wind situations)

Then we have the knots on the kites, and in some cases on the front lines above the power strap. But first let’s look at the knots at the kite.

On most kites you have multiple attachment points for the steering lines, what these do is allows you to make the steering lines more or less tight. When you attach the steering line on the very last knot (furthest away from the kite) you make the back lines longer which gives you extra depower. The middle knot is is the recommended setting from the factory as it gives good depower but doesn’t affect the steering much, then the knot closest to the kite will make the back lines more tense which will automatically power the kite up a bit.

On some kites you will find some knots on the front line attachment points or just above the depower strap, these change the angle of attack depending on which knot you put it on. If they are at the kite, the last knot is the most power, the furthest knot from the kite is the least power. When you have this option above the depower strap there can be up to 4 or 5 knots. The one lowest knot will be the most depower and the highest( factory setting is the most power) always be careful when changing these as they are mostly only necessary when the wind is really strong or for a lighter rider. They also are almost impossible to change while on the water. With the power line knots on your own kite its best to play around with the different settings in light winds to see how they affect the kite and its behavior.

– HOW TO UPWIND BODY DRAG

Upwind body dragging is never much fun that’s why if you get it right it’s a lot quicker to get back to your board.

Body position for the upwind body drag is extremely important. You want your body to be as straight as possible, with your bottom arm extended (ear to your shoulder) and your top arm holding the bar, you want to be lying directly on your side, on your back works too but it is not as efficient. If you lie on your stomach you will keep getting dragged down wind. You want to try keep your kite at 11 or 1. Also remember you cannot go straight up wind, you can only go slightly upwind of the half wind course.

When changing directions, never put both hands on the bar as you will automatically pull it in and start to drift down wind, instead with your top hand slowly drift the kite past 12, as its going past 12 release the bar, extend that arm and switch hands on the bar now lying on your opposite side and continue body dragging until you reach your board.

– WHY TO USE A GOE-JOE AND HOW IT WORKS:

A go-joe is the safe alternative to a board leash, board leashes have the tendency to act as an elastic and shoot the board back at the rider which is very dangerous because a lot of energy gets stored in the leash when the board goes under water and then released in one second.

A go-joe is an inflatable attachment on the board between the footpads which acts as a mini sail for the board, when inflated properly it will flip a upside down board the right way and then help it to drift faster downwind. Not only this but if you don’t reach your board it has a bright coloured strip on it which makes it highly visible and easy to see again.
